The Heart of Your Town
ISTD Competition Brief
Brief
As part of a Design Briefs and Competitions module, I responded to the 2024 ISTD Brief 4: Death of the Centre. This brief asked us to create an experiential typographic intervention that encourages audiences to re-engage with their local town or city.
Insights
My response was to create a guided tour of people’s memories through a chosen town or city centre. This was visualised in the form of a five page (front cover and two spreads) brochure that opens up to reveal the map of said memories for the audience to follow.
The design rationale behind this was to create an outcome that required physical interaction from the audience, such as unfolding and rotating the paper, as a method of mirroring how the audience will interact with their town centre - discovering new areas of it and building a physical and emotional connection with it.
This resulted in ‘The Heart of your Town’, an organisation that aims to bring life back into town and city centres. It looks at them as a living, breathing part of towns and cities that’s vital for communities to survive and flourish. The concept here is that this is just one in a series of memory maps and booklets, both for Portsmouth specifically and for other towns and cities across the UK.
